Caritas Cape Verde, which was founded in 1976, works in a country whose food security is threatened by drought and lack of arable land. Since 1999, Caritas has been offering programs to empower poor families and communities to create favourable conditions for people to adapt to climate vulnerability. Examples include the program to empower poor communities on the islands of Santiago and Santo Antão, and the João Varela agro-ecological project.

In 2008, Cape Verde moved from a least developed country to a middle-income country. The country has had some difficulty adjusting to this situation because it has resulted in a reduction in the amount of foreign development assistance. Among the problems facing Caritas Cape Verde today are the rising crime rate, and the increasing number of migrants from the West African coast.

Food and nutritional security: development of agro-ecology and small vegetable gardens, an increase in family income (income generating activities, solidarity economy).

Access to drinking water: assistance for the construction of cisterns and tanks to collect rainwater and conserve the water transported.

Rehabilitation of the houses of the poorest

Integration of children at risk: (Mindelo project for street children) leisure activities, summer camps, manual activities and recycling.

Defense of civil rights and social commitment: Awareness actions on the use of drugs and alcohol, prevention of delinquency, creation of economic interest groups.

Training and capacity building for job creation and self-employment (crafts, culinary arts)

Environmental protection: introduction to agro-ecology, tree planting and introduction of new drought resistant species.

Internal and external sharing: sharing between parish Caritas and between economic solidarity groups, sharing of experiences and working methods with the Caritas network: Brazil, Caritas France – Champagne Ardennes region.

Caritas Cape Verde participates in some government commissions (Anti-Drug Commission). At the international level, Caritas Cape Verde works in collaboration with Secours Catholique – Champagne Ardenne region – France, Caritas Luxembourg and the John Paul II Foundation for the Sahel, Italian Episcopal Conference.
