Caritas Côte d’Ivoire, the charitable organization of the Catholic Church in Côte d’Ivoire, was created in 1955 and registered with the Ministry of the Interior in 1968. It aims to promote the development of all human beings and all aspects of the human person by creating an awareness of solidarity, sharing, social justice and peace according to the values of the Gospel.

Caritas Côte d’Ivoire is present throughout the country and operates through 15 Diocesan Caritas and more than 400 parish Caritas to help the most disadvantaged populations. These parish Caritas include the operational teams with more than 20,000 basic ecclesial communities, where efforts have been made for more than 50 years to fully implement charity.

Caritas Côte d’Ivoire has three main areas of intervention, namely emergency aid, human development, health and the fight against HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.

It is involved in programs that promote agricultural development, improve access to drinking water and sanitation systems, and support income-generating activities.

Caritas Côte d’Ivoire works on human rights and the protection of children vulnerable to exploitation through a project that combats the worst cases of child labor in the cocoa sector, a reintegration project for Ivorian returnees, and a project to assist Liberian refugees in Côte d’Ivoire. It also advocates and develops initiatives for peacebuilding, reconciliation and social cohesion.

In order to achieve its objectives, Caritas Côte d’Ivoire works in partnership with national and international humanitarian and development organizations, including: UNHCR, Global Fund, ICI BNETD (Ivorian government agency), Caritas network members (France; Spain; South Korea; Japan; Italy; USA), WFP, UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, FAO etc.
