Caritas South Sudan was founded in 2011 after the declaration of independence of South Sudan, and is the official organization of the Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference. In its first year of operation, the organization has seen strong growth and many successes. These include considerable strengthening of systems and organizational development of national and diocesan offices, as well as humanitarian activities and assistance through the Caritas emergency appeal.

Caritas South Sudan’s solidarity with those in need and its commitment to serving people with love and dignity are the basis of the organization’s initiatives. Its programs include capacity building for sustainable development, advocacy for peace and national reconciliation, prevention measures to curb the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and disaster preparedness and humanitarian assistance to respond quickly in a country prone to regular disasters, both natural and man-made, such as drought, famine and conflict.

Caritas South Sudan is headquartered in Juba and employs about 15 people. Its national secretariat coordinates the 6 dioceses for the implementation of its activities.

Caritas South Sudan is a member of Caritas Internationalis and Caritas Africa. The organization works with its Caritas partners to facilitate its initiatives, such as a 2012 project with Catholic Relief Services USA to provide shelter, water, and encourage capacity building, sanitation and hygiene.
