The National Union of Diocesan Associations for Relief and Development (UNAD-Caritas Chad) is an instrument of the social ministry of the Church Family of God in Chad. It was created on October 27, 1986 and is composed of eight member associations that are active throughout the country. AURA – Caritas Mongo, BELACD Caritas of Doba, BELACD of Goré, BELACD of Laï, BELACD of Moundou, BELACD of Pala, BELACD of Sarh and SECADEV for the Archdiocese of N’Djaména

The vision of UNAD – Caritas Chad is that of the Catholic Church in Chad, “to work for a society of justice and peace, with men and women, confident in their potentialities, their strengths and who engage in concrete and promising actions to ensure their autonomy.

It is also the vision of a world in which the goods of God’s creation belong to all. The men, women and children of Chad have the right to live in dignity and love. The fundamental values of UNAD – Caritas Chad are: faith, charity and love of neighbor.

The strategic axes of UNAD – Caritas Chad are :

  • Basic social services (food security, health, hygiene and sanitation)
  • Local governance (civic and citizen education, conflict prevention and management, rational and concerted management of natural resources)
  • Emergencies and humanitarian actions
  • Capacity building (partnerships, visibility, and human resource development)

The projects and activities coordinated by UNAD – Caritas Chad in 2017 are:

  • Health (Axis 1): support to 36 health centers, 3 hospitals and 6 Diocesan Centers for the Accompaniment of the Sick (CEDIAM); supply of materials and medicines and capacity building of the health structures’ personnel. The Health Program is funded by MISEREOR.
  • Self-help Capacity Building Project (PRECA) for Sudanese refugees in the Milé and Kounoungou camps and surrounding villages (Axis 3): This is a continuation of the AE projects implemented since the arrival of Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad. The sectors covered by PRECA are: Food Security, WASH and Capacity Building. It is funded by Caritas Denmark and implemented by SECADEV – Caritas Ndjamena.
  • Project of Integration of Sudanese refugees in local communities (Axes 1, 2 and 4), implemented by SECADEV and financed by Caritas Denmark for a period of twelve months.
  • EA 21/2016 (Axis 3): project to support victims of the Nigerian crisis in the Lake Chad region, implemented by SECADEV. The sectors covered are: Food Security, WASH and Livelihoods.
  • Socio-economic integration project for CAR returnees in southern Chad, Djako site in the diocese of Moundou. It lasts eight months and focuses on livelihood activities. It is executed by the Caritas of Moundou with funding from Secours Catholique Caritas France.
  • Program of personalized proximity support (A2P, axis 4) for institutional development and organizational strengthening (DIRO). The current phase lasts three years, from 2016 to 2018, and affects the entire Caritas Chad network. It is funded by Secours Catholique Caritas France.

The main partners of UNAD-Caritas Chad are: the Chadian state through its various ministries, Caritas Internationalis, Caritas Africa, Misereor, Caritas Switzerland, Caritas Denmark, Secours Catholique France, Catholic Relief Services, Caritas Spain, Caritas Korea, Caritas Japan, the European Union, and AFD.
