The Republic of Mozambique is located on the southern east coast of Africa, and Caritas Mozambique is an entity of the Catholic Church in the country, which defines itself as “a driving force of charity in the community that seeks to encourage the integral development of men and women. It is made up of 12 dioceses throughout the country.

Caritas Mozambique was founded in 1977, just two years after the country’s independence, to help Zimbabwean refugees. Since its inception, the organization has also helped to combat the pain and suffering of the people of Mozambique, mainly caused by the civil war that began that same year and lasted until 1992. Caritas Mozambique found it necessary to focus all of its efforts on the victims of the war by providing assistance to them, so much so that it was considered a humanitarian organization by the conflicting groups.

After the war, Caritas Mozambique had to rethink its objectives because the reason for its creation was no longer relevant. So, since then, it has focused its efforts in the following areas:

  • Helping people in emergency situations (Mozambique is still subject to drought in the south and floods in the center of the country)
  • Integrated rural development
  • Support for community initiatives in the areas of education, health services, water, agriculture, etc.
  • Help for vulnerable, forgotten or marginalized groups due to political choices or socio-economic changes
  • Creating opportunities for training, housing, health services, agriculture and investment
  • Use of natural resources and credits for the development of individuals, families, and social group initiatives.
  • Restructuring and strengthening of institutions
  • Capacity building of its staff at the General Secretariat (National Caritas), Diocesan and Parish Caritas levels.

Caritas Mozambique has become an interlocutor with the government in the implementation of social programs and assistance for people affected by natural disasters. At the same time, it works together with European Caritas like Caritas Spain, Caritas Portugal, Caritas Italy, Caritas Germany, Caritas Austria, CAFOD (Caritas England & Wales), Trócaire (Caritas Ireland) and CRS (Catholic Relief Services).
