Caritas Madagascar was founded in 1959 after the flood that devastated a large part of the island. It was a branch of the French Secours Catholique and was given the name “Vonjy Aina Katolika” or Secours Catholique de Madagascar. It works through parish structures, districts and local dioceses to help disadvantaged groups. It is mainly involved in the aftermath of natural disasters that affect Madagascar – drought, cyclones, floods – and is often the best placed organization to reach the most isolated regions.

Caritas Madagascar is involved in emergency relief and rehabilitation in the form of food aid, medical and hygiene items, support for agricultural production and health programs. It is also involved in agricultural development projects such as seed distribution to ensure planting at the right time of the year.

To carry out its humanitarian and development aid projects, Caritas Madagascar works in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the World Bank, WaterAid, the Swiss Cooperation, the Campaign Against Hunger for Development, Catholic Relief Services and other Caritas organizations: Secours Catholique, Caritas: Malta, Belgium, Switzerland.
