The Ethiopian Catholic Church was founded in 1965 and was declared the NGO wing of the Ethiopian Catholic Church by the Ethiopian government in 2000. It was founded with the mandate to establish, encourage and coordinate the social and pastoral activities of the Universal Church in Ethiopia. Today, the programs of the Ethiopian Catholic Church (ECC) address the ever-increasing social, pastoral and development needs of Ethiopians.

The organization’s institutions work at the community and national levels to provide humanitarian assistance, emergency relief and security, social reintegration assistance, water and sanitation development, health and HIV/AIDS education, capacity building programs, and women and gender and development campaigns.

In addition to humanitarian aid, the organization offers development programs that provide families and individuals with long-term solutions to current and chronic drought problems. In 2012, it launched a reintegration and recovery project to improve the resilience of the population to risks and disasters. The one-year appeal provides access to clean water, improves hygiene and sanitation practices, facilitates crop and livestock production, soil and water conservation, encourages income-generating activities, and improves rural access to facilitate mobility for human agricultural production. It improves the lives of more than 64,000 households in 4 regions of Ethiopia.

In addition, the Ethiopian Catholic Church is campaigning on the growing concern of migration in Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian Catholic Secretariat is based in Addis Ababa and employs 95 people. In addition to the Secretariat, 12 diocesan secretariats and 256 parishes in Ethiopia work to gain the trust of the people, especially the poor.

As a member of Caritas Internationalis and Caritas Africa, Caritas Ethiopia works in partnership at home and abroad with the global Caritas network such as Caritas Italy, Catholic Relief Services USA, Caritas Belgium, Caritas Spain, Caritas England and Wales, Caritas Ireland, Caritas Netherlands, Caritas Scotland, Caritas Germany, Caritas Switzerland, Caritas Africa members, Caritas Korea, Caritas Austria, Caritas Denmark, Caritas Czech Republic, Caritas France, and Caritas Canada.
