Caritas Tanzania was founded by the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) in 1971 to coordinate charitable and social development activities in the dioceses of Tanzania. It is therefore the socio-economic wing (or department) of the TEC. Caritas Tanzania’s activities seek to empower communities by improving their living conditions through gender and development programs, emergency and humanitarian assistance, and training to encourage income-generating activities.

Caritas Tanzania is involved in humanitarian programs in the following sectors :

• Programme Australie-Afrique d’engagement communautaire (AACES)
• Programs to Improve the Quality of Community Development Management in Tanzania’s Dioceses
• Support the national Gender and Development program
• Drought Recovery Program
• Gender and Human Rights Project

Caritas Tanzania’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam employs 11 people. The headquarters serves the 34 Catholic dioceses in Tanzania and Zanzibar. Caritas Tanzania is governed by a Board of Directors, chaired by the Presiding Bishop, which is composed of elected representatives from the diocesan Caritas/Development offices. The Board is responsible for the policy and strategic direction of CT. It plays a monitoring and advisory role with respect to TC services and programs.

Caritas Tanzania collaborates with, and receives support from, the Caritas Internationalis confederation, such as Caritas Africa, Caritas Germany, Caritas Australia, and Caritas AMECEA. The organization also represents TEC in several national networks, such as the Tanzania Coalition for Debt and Development, the Tanzania Gender Networking Programme, and the Tanzania Ecumenical Dialogue Group.
